Activation & Water Conservation

Apr. 21, 2026 Activation & Water Conservation

This Earth Day, we’re highlighting how even small design decisions can significantly influence the way we conserve and manage natural resources—particularly water. In aquatic play settings such as splash pad environments, technology is essential in creating a balance between recreation and sustainability. Dynamic Sequencing Controllers (DSCs) serve as a strong example of how innovative systems can support both goals.

What is a DSC?
A Dynamic Sequencing Controller is a programmable system that manages how and when water features operate. With the ability to schedule dozens of customizable events, DSCs process real-time inputs—such as user activation or system demands—to control pumps, valves, and spray features efficiently. In splash pad applications, they help regulate water flow and timing, ensuring water is only used when needed.

Supporting Water Conservation

  • Efficient Water Use:
Ensures water features operate only when needed by controlling activation timing and duration, helping to significantly reduce unnecessary water consumption.
  • Energy Optimization:
Through coordinated control of pumps and valves, including smooth start-up and shutdown sequences, they can enhance systems efficiency and lower overall energy usage.
  • Reduced Waste and Maintenance:
By reducing strain on system components, DSCs help extend equipment lifespan, resulting in fewer repairs and replacements and minimizing material waste.
  • Sustainable Design in Practice:
They can support the development of interactive splash environments that are both engaging and resource-efficient, demonstrating that sustainability and recreation can successfully align.

A clear example of this approach can be seen in a splash pad project completed last summer at Bennett Springs State Park. At this site, Dynamic Sequencing Controller (DSC) technology operates behind the scenes to regulate water flow and control activation.  For example, the Bass Head and Tail spray feature alternates water effects, creating dynamic bursts that enhance the play experience while conserving water. The splash pad is also equipped with a Touch N’ Go Bollard, allowing users to activate spray elements on the pad at their leisure—such as the Crookett, Cattails Too, Complete 3 Unit Group, and various ground sprays like the Jet Ways. This  user-controlled operation helps limit unnecessary water consumption while still providing an interactive and engaging recreational experience that is inherently playful.

By improving water efficiency, reducing energy demands, and minimizing system waste, DSCs contribute to more sustainable infrastructure. These systems show that environmental responsibility can be effectively integrated into public amenities without compromising functionality or enjoyment.
