The discussion began to add a splash pad to the city of Sullivan, Missouri in April of 2018. What is considered one of the largest representations of the iconic Route 66 logo, the 2,800 square foot Missouri splash pad was themed due to its direct location beside the historic route. The Mayor at the time, Dennis Watz, decided upon a splash pad to boost community engagement.
Consulting with the Board of Aldermen, City Administration, Parks and Recreation and Engineering the design and theme of the splash pad had been decided. Due to the proximity to the Mother road, the pad would be themed around the city’s roots and the iconic presence of Route 66. The city was responsible for funding the splash pad, purchasing it through a cooperative purchasing agreement.
Speaking with an aquatic consultant, the city outlined their splash pad wants and needs. Water Odyssey met the desires of the city. With a handful of pre-themed water spray elements along with two custom manufactured products, the pad was fully equipped for play encompassing a total of 18 water features. Several custom pieces were manufactured especially for the city’s location such as a custom Chevy car sprayer and a Hot Rod sprayer to coincide with the Route 66 theme, but also a custom railroad-style water tower was made. This piece is a nod to the railroad that originated the city and still runs through it today. With consistent positive responses and continued community interaction at the park, the installation of the splash pad is considered a popular success.
