In the small South Texas town of Tilden, home to nearly 300 residents, McMullen County Heritage Park blends local history with modern recreational opportunities. Originally established on land donated to the county 70 years ago, the park continues its legacy by providing a welcoming space for generations to gather connect, and play.
Located along the Frio River, the park features walking trails, fitness stations, pickleball and basketball courts, and a covered pavilion with restrooms and picnic areas. At the heart of this community destination is a western-themed splash pad that celebrates the ranching traditions, rodeo culture, and native wildlife that define McMullen County.
Designed to reflect the region's distinctive character, the splash pad incorporates western-inspired elements, including horseshoes, saloons, and a windmill. The custom surfacing features a birds-eye view of the Texas Plains, complete with cacti, animal tracks, stars, and a lasso encircling the aquatic play area. Every detail contributes to a cohesive splash pad design rooted in the landscapes and traditions familiar to the local community.
Water Odyssey's Water Windmill takes center stage, serving as both a striking visual landmark and a tribute to the area's ranching heritage. Hand wheels activate individual arm effects, including the water wheel, spray bubble, morning glory, and spout. A central swivel wheel rotates the upper assembly, directing streams of water from the windmill's blades for an interactive play experience.
Additional signature aquatic play features bring the western landscape to life. The Mushroom Maze and Water Web create cactus-inspired silhouettes with cascading sheets of water and web-like streams. Throughout the splash pad, a variety of ground sprays, including Baby and Daddy Long Legs, Bug Buggle, Directional Eyeballs, Simple Sprays, Popp Dropp, Mistee Jets, Water Cage, and Flush Mount Shower Nozzles, deliver playful surprises form every direction.
